Choosing Between Room, Row, and Rack-based Cooling for Data Centers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Latest generation high density and variable density IT equipment create conditions that traditional data center cooling was never intended to address, resulting in cooling systems that are oversized, inefficient, and unpredictable. Room, row, and rack-based cooling methods have been developed to address these problems. This paper describes these improved cooling methods and provides guidance on when to use each type for most next generation data centers. Executive summary >

The Advantages of Row and Rack - Oriented Cooling Architectures for Data Centers
Room cooling is an ineffective approach for next-generation data centers. Latest generation high density and variable density IT equipment create conditions that room cooling was never intended to address, resulting in cooling systems that are inefficient, unpredictable, and low in power density. Row-oriented and rack-oriented cooling architectures have been developed to address these problems....
متن کاملRetrieval–travel-time model for free-fall-flow-rack automated storage and retrieval system
Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RSs) are material handling systems that are frequently used in manufacturing and distribution centers. The modelling of the retrieval–travel time of an AS/RS (expected product delivery time) is practically important, because it allows us to evaluate and improve the system throughput. The free-fall-flow-rack AS/RS has emerged as a new technology for dr...
متن کاملModeling and Control for Cooling Management of Data Centers with Hot Aisle Containment
In traditional raised-floor data center design with hot aisle and cold aisle separation, the cooling efficiency suffers from recirculation resulting from the mixing of cool air from the Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units and the hot exhaust air exiting from the back of the server racks. To minimize recirculation and hence increase cooling efficiency, hot aisle containment has been empl...
متن کاملInvestigation on the Energy Saving Potential of Using a Novel Dew Point Cooling System in Data Centres
Information technology (IT) has brought significant changes in people’s lives. As an important part of the IT industry, data centres (DCs) have been rapidly growing in both the number and size over the past 40 years. Around 30% to 40% of electricity consumption in DCs is used for space cooling, thus leading to very inefficient DC operation. To identify ways to reduce the energy consumption for ...
متن کاملCfd Simulations Comparing Hard Floor and Raised Floor Configurations in an Air Cooled Data Center
An increasing number of companies and organisations have started to outsource their data storage. Although the potential of future investments in data centers is prosperous, sustainability is an increasingly important factor. It is important to make sure that the server racks in data centers are sufficiently cooled whereas too much forced cooling leads to economical losses and a waste of energy...
